Increasing numbers of employees with a non-Dutch nationality work at Dutch universities. In 2022, 28% of all staff will have a non-Dutch nationality. Data is based on passport nationality.

From 2021, citizens of the United Kingdom will no longer be considered part of the EEA. This is partly the background to the growth in numbers of personnel from outside the EEA in reporting year 2021. But even without this change in country classification, the number of non-Dutch EEA personnel is increasing.

Academic Staff

The development of the share of international personnel in terms of persons and FTEs in academic staff, show an increase in the proportion of international employees in almost all positions.

Salary

In 2015, at the request of UNL (then: VSNU), researchgroup SEO conducted research into the remuneration of academic staff from an international perspective. This research showed that research universities compete internationally to recruit the best researchers.

In terms of salary, Dutch universities cannot compete with American, British and Swiss universities, but they fare well against most countries in continental Europe.
